The goal was to learn a bit about the scientific process from a scientist, see how a scientist goes about answering how things work, and to absorb some of that passion for basic science. We also wanted to learn about how our actions impact the surroundings and the environment, and how is one species affecting the rest of the environment.
Professor Villablanca is the principal investigator of MonarchAlert, the organization entrusted by United States Fish and Wildlife agency to tag and study Monarch Butterflies in our part of California. (Learn more at https://monarchalert.calpoly.edu/)
The Vintage Magnet students from those two classes were able to participate in the Citizen Scientist Program from Monarch Alert and tag the Monarch Butterflies they raised. See this article that describes the process.
