DON'T FORGET TO MENTION YOU ARE FROM VINTAGE! Thank you so much. Vintage Student, Fernanda P. was the winner of the FOCAL essay contest for the second year in a row! Writing an essay response to the book, Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonotiuh, Fernanda was chosen as the winner of the 3rd-4th grade category. She won last year, as well, after writing about The Tree Lady, by H. Joseph Hopkins. Winners are chosen in 3rd-4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th grades.
FOCAL (Friends of Children And Literature) chooses a book to honor each year and schools all over are given the opportunity to have their students enter. Our librarian, Mrs. Forbes, reads the book to as many classes as she is able to and offers the students the opportunity to enter. Essays are written and re-written to perfection and are then submitted. As part of her award, Fernanda, along with Mrs. Forbes, her teacher, Mr. Goldberg, and her mother, Heidy Reyes, attended a luncheon on Saturday in downtown Los Angeles. Fernanda was invited to read her essay in front of everyone and received a signed book from the author. The story was about a woman named Sylvia Mendez, whose parents fought for the rights of Mexican children to attend any school they chose during a time of segregation. Mrs. Mendez attended the luncheon and Fernanda had the privilege of being able to sit with her and talk about her story. Students will be invited to enter the next year's essay contest some time the end of October. Sepulveda Middle School will host on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, from 8AM to 2PM in Room 4 prescreening and application assistance for free or low-cost health insurance will be provided (Evaluación y asistencia con la solicitud de seguro médico gratuito o de bajo costo.) As the first half of the school year is coming to an end there are still many things to be excited for other than Vintage famous Holiday show that will be December 17 & 18. GIRLS BASKETBALL Vintage has been playing in the annual after school tournament that has over 200 school entries from the San Fernando Valley. Both teams entered the final round of the Valley Regional Finals with a 5-0 record respectively. This past Saturday (December 5) the girls basketball team needed 3 wins to be called champions. After 2 wins, they knew that they were 1 win away from becoming the only girl’s team to ever win a championship in Vintage History! The game began, it looked like it was not going to be easy. As the game started to run out of time, Vintage managed to take care of their lead and win by 2 points! The girls ran to their coach with excitement and joy as they were happy to say “We are the champions!” BOYS BASKETBALL Right after the girl’s game, the boys’ basketball team congratulated the girls as they too had a goal in mind to win first place as well. They too had very dramatic games to get to the final championship game. Lemay Vs Vintage was a classic game like the Lakers/Celtics as both teams wanted to win and were playing really well. The game goes to over time and Vintage is losing by 4 points when Christian M. hits a 3 pointer to keep it close and Gavin M finds a way to steal the ball and score again. Vintage was now winning by 1 point as the time ran out and they too ran to their coach in disbelief to see that they won the championship game! All the hard work that the boys and girls had put paid off, and they showed the world that Vintage is the Best! All the support from the parents and staff helped and are very fortunate to say they are the Boys & Girls Valley Champions of Basketball. What’s Next? The Boys and Girls Basketball team will have a school bus take them to the District-Wide Finals. Where: Sotomayor High School (2050 N. San Fernando Rd. Los Angeles, CA 90065) Time: 9:00 am When: December 12, 2015. Hope you all can make it and help Vintage claim the City Championship!
