The after school program YDP&YS participated in the Beyond the Bell Boys Basketball Tournament this past month.
They were able to beat two schools by a score of 16-5 & 19-1 and advance to the semi finals. Unfortunately the Vintage Boys lost a crucial game where both teams fought long and hard. As the score was close with a 18-14 loss. "I am very proud of this team and the way they represented Vintage Magnet!" -Coach Walter Vintage family and friends, Before this 2014 year ends, Vintage's PTA, staff, and most importantly, our Vintage students would like to say THANK YOU! for all your support. ![]() Vintage students, grades K through 5th, participated in a the Hour of Code event. Hour of Code is a global movement introducing millions of students in 180 plus countries to computer coding. It is designed to demystify coding so that anybody can learn it. The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. A coalition of partners have come together to support the Hour of Code, too — including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the College Board. The dates of December 8 through 12 was picked to be the official week for students worldwide to try coding. At Vintage, we participated during that week in addition to trying CODE.org activities at our Fall NASA night and also during Techie Tuesdays. Overall, students enjoyed the challenge of using the CODE.org puzzles to understand the process of computer coding. Many students excitedly discovered that they have a real knack for coding. From the photos below, you can see they are very engaged in the activities. Learn more about this wonderful opportunity by visiting CODE.org or clicking the links we have chosen. Click here to visit Vintage's CODING web links - Coding - for websites related to learning how to learn about coding. Students in grades 3 through 5 are invited to join a team and learn how to build and program a robot built of LEGOS.(Students in grade 1 and 2 may join as well, however parents should be prepared to provide ample support.) We need parents to coach teams. Teams will need to have access to a laptop or computer. We will provide the software, robotic kits and training. No experience is necessary, just imagination and commitment to learn and solve problems. Robotics teams usually practice once a week usually around 6pm in the auditorium.
Join us for an orientation and registration meeting on Thursday, February 5th, at 6 PM in the Vintage Auditorium. Fernanda’s essay was chosen as one of 4 winning essays by FOCAL (friends of children and libraries) for their annual essay contest.
Mrs. Forbes, our librarian, offered upper grade classes the opportunity to enter this contest. The book, “The Tree Lady” was read by Mrs. Forbes during library visits. Students were asked to write an essay telling what part of the story or character “stuck with them”, what they learned about the main character, and how they would feel if they met the author. Fernanda and her mother, Heidy Reyes, had the privilege of attending the annual FOCAL luncheon this past Saturday. Fernanda was able to meet the author, receive an autographed book of “The Tree Lady” and enjoyed lunch with the author and the other award winners. Vintage is very proud of Fernanda and also the following students who wrote wonderful essays as well. Alana D., 3rd grade Paul A., 4th grade Katie N., 4th grade Emily B., 5th grade Isabella M., 5th grade. A newsletter for parents of gifted / talented students can be downloaded by clicking below.
