How to think like a scientist with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Professor Francis Villablanca, PHD,  “What made you want to be a scientist?” asked a 5th grader. Curiosity! Answered Professor Villablanca. On Tuesday, November 13th 2018, Mrs. J. Hall’s class of 1st graders and Mrs. Rios ‘s 5th grade class had the amazing opportunity to video conference with Professor Francis Villablanca from California Polytechnic State University in San Louis Obispo.

The goal was to learn a bit about the scientific process from a scientist, see how a scientist goes about answering how things work, and to absorb some of that passion for basic science. We also wanted to learn about how our actions impact the surroundings and the environment, and how is one species affecting the rest of the environment.

Professor Villablanca is the principal investigator of MonarchAlert, the organization entrusted by United States Fish and Wildlife agency to tag and study Monarch Butterflies in our part of California. (Learn more at https://monarchalert.calpoly.edu/)

The Vintage Magnet students from those two classes were able to participate in the Citizen Scientist Program from Monarch Alert and tag the Monarch Butterflies they raised. See this article that describes the process.

Mark your calendar on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, 5:30 - 7:30 PM to bring the family to PTA's Winter Event. The Book Fair will also be open 5:30 to 6:30 PM in time for holiday shopping. We want to know what you think about our school.  Please complete the School Experience Survey, and return completed form to your child’s teacher.  Classes with 100% of the surveys completed and returned will receive $10 Bear Dollars. (5 Minutes of Your Time = $10 Bear Dollars)

Any parent who opts to complete the survey online should go to achieve.lausd.net/schoolexperiencesurvey and input the 10-digit parent code found on the top right corner of his or her parent letter.  If you lost your letter, your code will be 7562 followed by the 6 digit birthday of your oldest child at Vintage.  You can also find the link to the survey on vintagemagnet.net.

Please complete the survey by Wednesday, December 5th.

Thanks to Vintage's PTA, our school is able to provide many needed materials, equipment, field trips, and staff.  Without their fundraising efforts, technology and support positions such as lab assistants and aides, just as an example, run the risk of not having the funding to maintain.  Please help out by buying one or more items from the catalog.  The sale starts October 31 and ends November 14, 2018.  Students who sale 10 or more items will be invited to an ice cream party. There are other fun prizes that can be earned.  More details are provided below in English and Spanish. Delivery date is December 13, 2018,  just in time for the holidays.  Thank you!
