Scholastic Brings New York Times Best Selling Author to Vintage!

5/31/2016

Fourth graders at Vintage were treated to an amazing author visit with renowned author, Jennifer A. Nielsen. This visit was provided to our school by Scholastic Book Company, who flew Mrs. Nielsen to California to visit our school. This gift was part of an award given to Vintage due to our second place win in the Scholastic Book Fairs 2015 contest.

Mrs. Nielsen captivated her audience of students, teachers, and parents. She shared about her most recent book, A Night Divided, which tells the story of a 12 year old girl who lives in Germany during the divide of Germany by the Berlin Wall. The young girl, Gerta, is separated on the East side of the wall with her mother and older brother, from her father and younger brother who are on the West side. Gerta’s family tries to figure out how to reunite.

The students enjoyed hearing the history behind the story by Mrs. Nielsen who is a self professed, history lover.  She shared a very engaging  power-point presentation.  She also talked about some of her other books such as The False Prince which is part of the Ascendance Trilogy and the Mark of the Thief Trilogy.

Students were given a question and answer time and then stood in line to have a personal connection with the author and have their books autographed.

Vintage would like to thank Scholastic Book Company for this most wonderful event. Scholastic VIP’s, Alan Gilreath, Regional Field Sales Manager and John Hales, Field Sales Supervisor, were in attendance.

Principals (for the Day) 2016 - Mr. Colin M. and Ms. Ella L.

5/11/2016

Sometimes it just takes extra hands to get all the work done that it takes to run Vintage Magnet School.  Vintage's Principal, Ms. Mourao, sure appreciated the extra help she received from Monday's Principal for the Day, Mr. Colin M. from Room 15.  Mr. Colin M.  was more than happy to assist with the Awards Assembly by leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tuesday, Ms. Ella L. from Room 13 was on hand to help.  Using her expert public speaking ability, she kept the school updated about important school events and updates with announcements over the PA.  She also was on hand to help out wherever needed.  She told this reporter that if she had her way, every recess would be an extended recess!

Both Principals for the Day began their day creating a slide show presentation about themselves to show at that day's Awards Assembly. They both dressed for success that day and took their job serious.  Thank you Mr. Colin M. and Ms. Ella L. for taking time from your busy schedules to help out Vintage's principal.

School Board Honors  Vintage's Gold  Ribbon Status

5/11/2016

May 3, 2016 Los Angeles Unified School District's Office of the Superintendent held a ceremony to acknowledge elementary schools receiving the California Department of Education "Gold Ribbon Award" which replaces the California Distinguished School Award which is on hiatus.  According to the CDE, this award is for recognition of educational quality with the implementation of academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all pupils, including English learners.

There were 40 elementary school that earned this award this year. LAUSD school board members gathered together administrators from those school, including our own principal, Mrs. Mourao, to present them with an official certificate.  This award could not have been achieved without the teamwork of Vintage's teachers and staff along with students and their families working to do the very best they can when it comes to educating our children.

Click here to learn more about the California Gold Ribbon Award program.

Spell-A-Thon Helps Support Vintage's Computer Lab

5/6/2016

Friday, May 13th, Vintage will hold a Spell-A-Thon  fundraiser dedicated to keeping our Computer Lab technology current.  For over 20 years, parents have joined together and  worked hard to provide a lab for Vintage's students with computers that will help them learn how to be technology literate and skilled.  If you have ever come in to the Computer Lab from 'before school to the end of school day,' you will find our students using those computers.

Here's how you can help...
Pledges - Students raise money for the Spell-A-Thon by collecting pledges. Pledges can be 'per word' or 'flat' donations. We encourage each child to ask only people he/she knows for pledges. You child is not required to have pledges in order to participate. We accept cash or check made payable to Vintage Student Body.

Click here for a pledge sheet for the Spell-A-Thon. Pledge sheets are due on Friday, May 20th. After your child participates in the Spell-A-Thon, your child will collect his/her pledges/donations and return them to school in the enclosed envelope by Friday, May 20th. The K-3 and 4th grade class that raises the most money will receive an ice-cream party!

Thank you in advance for all of your generosity and support! Computers and technology are going to be critical components of the new Common Core curriculum over the coming years.  It is imperative that we have a state-of-the-art computer lab to ensure our students meet all of the expectation of the Common Core State Standards.

Y'all Parents and Friends of Vintage Deserve a Mighty Big THANK YOU!

5/5/2016

The week of May 2 - May 6 was Teacher/Staff Appreciation week.  Vintage teachers and staff were made to feel extra special. Vintage was a brighter and sweeter place to be that week.  Flowers and sweets were delivered by eager children (and grateful parents) to rooms.  Touching notes of appreciation were also received.  On Tuesday, teachers and staff were rustled into the Rattlesnake Cafe/auditorium by a handsome cowboy for a fun, relaxing, and totally yummy BBQ luncheon complete with desserts and beverages.  There, a posse of parents dressed in their western best, raffled off prizes to some lucky teachers and staff members.  Darling mason jars filled to the brim with sweets and other surprises were passed out to  teachers / staff  for the mighty fine job they do educating Vintage's young 'uns.  Cleverly worded wanted posters to were tacked up along the walls giving everyone a good chuckle. So, on behalf of all the teachers and staff, THANK YOU for being  supportive and thoughtful Vintage families.  PTA parents, an extra big hug from all of us for your dedication and time spent  making Vintage special.

Visit our photo page for photos of this wonderful luncheon.
