Odyssey of the Mind 2018-19

3/28/2019

The Vintage family is so proud of the students who participated in the Odyssey of the Mind program. Their dedication, hard work and meticulous problem solving helped each team accomplish a great deal. This year we had three teams. They spent several months, reading and analyzing the long-term problems in various categories. While there were many guidelines and requirements to follow, these teams created solutions, wrote scripts and made up songs and dances to impress the judges. They built structures out of Balsa Wood, cardboard and recycled materials. They made costumes out of trash bags and paper. They listened to their peers and demonstrated sportsmanship. Their creativity and humor along with leadership skills helped each team preserver through the challenges and overcome the obstacles that came up prior to and during the competition. As each team presented their long-term problem and worked together cooperatively to solve a spontaneous problem on March 2, 2019 at Westlake High School, they truly represented the spirit of Vintage. The teams competed against teams from Ventura County, Santa Barbara County and many teams from Los Angeles County.

Although all of our teams did a wonderful job, we want to congratulate our Structure Toss team for advances to the State Championships. Way to Go Team!!! They went head to head with other winning teams from all over southern California on March 23, 2019 in Riverside, CA.

Great Work Everyone!!!

Aloha! Author Adam T. Newman Visits Vintage with a New Book

3/27/2019

On Monday, March 25th, author Adam T. Newman came to Vintage Magnet to present his latest book titled,  “Kai and Ty go to Hawaii.” He spoke about how his first book, “How to Catch a Cold,” and his second book “How to Fight a Cold” are based on the antics of his son Tyler. His third book, “The girl who lost her voice,” is based on his daughter Carlee.

He talked about how things that are dear to his family, like the blanket his grandmother made and places that his family has visited are integrated into his stories. He also showed a Vision Board he created when he was little of all the things he loved and wanted in life, like going to Hawaii, and to Disney World. How he wanted a Lamborghini when he grew up, and how he wanted to be in his favorite tv show Double Dare. His Vision Board helped him focus on the things he really wanted and planned to make them come true. He eventually made it on the show Double Dare with his friend when he was nine, and later returned to the show with his son Tyler. He also went to Disney World and Hawaii with his kids and his wife.

After reading his newest book, “Kai & Ty go to Hawaii”, he invited everyone to join him for his birthday party on Sunday March 31, at Menchies Yogurt.  All in all the students at Vintage enjoyed a great presentation.

Thank you Ms. N. Gomez - Vintage's Librarian for this report.

4th Grade Garden Club  Enjoys  Winter Salad They Grew

3/12/2019

Members of Vintage Magnet's 4th Grade Garden Club have been working hard all school year and finally were able to harvest vegetables they have been growing.  Gardening has been more of a challenge this year.  The colder weather and an unidentified critter have kept many of our plants from growing big enough to harvest and share.  The students have worked hard keeping the garden maintained.  Being able to eat food that they grew was a lot of fun for them.  They all ate every bit of their winter vegetable salad featuring an assortment of lettuces, snap peas, onion tops, parsley, and nasturtiums.

Additionally, they were able to take home some of the herbs (Thyme and Rosemary) that they grew to share with their families.  They made sure Principal Mourao got to take home some herbs also.
