Vintage Magnet Wins Second Place in 2016 Scholastic Book Fair National Contest!

3/28/2016

Mrs. Forbes, our librarian, has been running Scholastic Book Fairs for over 20 years! This year she decided to enter the NATIONAL Contest that Scholastic hosts. Entrants have to prove that they hosted their “Best Book Fair Ever”!
Mrs. Forbes formed a team of parents and pulled out all the stops to have a Monster themed, Monsterriffic Fair! Goals were set for money earned, books sold and reading minutes and for the “ All For Books” donation collection. ALL our goals were surpassed! There were 3,023 books sold, and over $15,000 in sales which included, $1,400 collected in our “Feed the Monster Campaign”. Our percentage earned allowed us to purchase over $5,000 in new books for our library!!!

Mrs. Forbes put a video together with the help of former Vintage teacher, Mr. Bullis, and submitted it along with a 100 page portfolio documenting our fair with a story, statistics, and photos.

Vintage is the proud winner of second place in the NATION! We will receive a $1,000 prize to spend on Scholastic books and products! Many thanks to all the Vintage Community who shopped at our fair or worked at our fair. And thank you again to the dedicated team of parents who donated hours of their time and money from their pockets to help Mrs. Forbes.

Heidy Reyes, Lorena Hernandez, Tammie Larson, Nancy Alderete, Gayane Goffman, Laura Godoy, Violeta Alarcon, Lizette Castro, Cindy Valles, Linda Carlin, Suzie Vicuna, Carol Mena, Sandra Kenig, Audra Murillo, Kim Potter, Marcie Delgado, Alba Meza, Susan Castillo.

Vintage Is Made Better With Your Donations!  Where Your Donations Go.

3/15/2016

Friday, March 11th's PTA Auction was a success.  Many of Vintage's families and friends ventured out on a damp, winter night to help support PTA's fundraising efforts.  Even better, many opened their pocketbooks and made generous bids on the many fine items that were being auctioned.  An impressive gallery of classroom art was available at the silent auction.  The auditorium soon filled up awaiting the auction to begin for the baskets that lined the long tables.  The lovely baskets, wrapped by our PTA, were filled with many themed goodies put together by each classroom.  In addition, there were teacher and staff events and mysterious boxes filled with hundred of dollars worth of gift cards and tickets to bid on.

A special presentation of a check for $500 was given to Vintage's 5th grade to go towards science camp by The Crunchy Crab.  Thank you to all the family and friends who ate there during our fundraising night.

In all, it was a lovely family event.  The thunderstorm passed through in enough time to dry out the ground so that the dance performance could take place.  Food was catered by Outback to those in need of some dinner.  Click here to check out photos from that evening.

Vintage has thought carefully about what areas to spend money on that would make our school a better experience for our students.  Sometimes the money raised goes towards something not very exciting such as copier maintenance.  Other times. it goes towards fun field trips for the students.  Here are some other areas in need of funding: yard supervision, library support and our librarian, computer lab equipment and our computer lab assistant, science lab supplies and science lab aide, a teacher appreciation day luncheon, and various other school needs. At other times there have been large projects,  air conditioning the school, and planting trees and grass around campus. Some projects require repeating such as such as upgrading the computer lab technology and upgrading the school science lab equipment and experiment supplies.  Overall, without funding by our parents these items and more would disappear from our school. So, thank you to our Vintage Community for your generosity!

Vintage  Attended Odyssey of the Mind Competition

3/8/2016

On February 27th, two Odyssey of the Mind teams from Vintage traveled to San Marino High School in the San Gabriel Valley to compete for the first time at the LA Basin Regional Tournament.  There they presented their Antarctica Fins, Fur, Feather and Friends skit meeting five pages of specifications.  A second group presented a Pirates skit involving building structures with  balsa wood and had to satisfy eight pages of specifications.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition for students of all ages and abilities.  Teams of between 5 to 7 students choose one of 5 problems, create a solution to it, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and age division.

There are many guidelines and requirements that must be followed.  Teams spend weeks, or months, creating solutions to their long-term problems.  Students must come up with all of the ideas for their solution and do all of the work themselves.  The teams are given a budget that they must not exceed, and a time limit of 8 minutes to present their solution.  In addition to the long-term problem, teams are given a spontaneous problem from the judges that the team must solve.  They have just a couple of minutes to think about it, then solve it together.  Judges place a lot of emphasis on innovative and creative ideas, expressive acting, original, student created scripts, songs, and dances,  unique use of common materials, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  This is a valuable experience for the students in that they are totally responsible for their own learning and solutions, all while they learn to really listen to each other, cooperate, and work towards a common goal.

Look What Fun  We Had for Read Across America 2016

3/8/2016

Thank you to everyone that participated in Read Across America.  Students had a blast letting their silly, fun side shine reflecting the silly, fun writings of Dr. Seuss.  Our librarian, Mrs. Forbes, made a cute slide show to share a few of her favorite photos from that week.  For more photos, click here.
