Vintage 4th Grade classrooms divided into tribes (groups) and a chief was selected to oversee his or her tribe. Students studied in class and researched in the computer lab about their assigned tribe. Each tribe member was responsible for one or more topics about their tribe. Topics included food, clothing, natural resources, tools, dwellings, geography, trade, beliefs and ceremonies. Students then practiced proper keyboarding skills and typed up their research information to add to a group presentation board. Below is an example of what Mr. Goldberg's class did. In addition, his students made artifacts which they proudly displayed in front of their research. As a tribe, they did a California Indians Gallery Walk. On a worksheet, students noted two interesting fact about each of the other tribes. They then compared and contrasted that tribe to the one they researched. Check out this learning experience below.
