If they didn't love salads before, they loved them when they ate a salad harvested from produce that they grew themselves. Fourth graders interested in gardening and school beautification meet with Mrs. Stone on Mondays at recess in our school garden on the west side of campus. Last fall they cleaned out weeds and old plants from their garden plots and refreshed the soil. They then planted plants and seeds that would do well in a cool weather garden such as: lettuce, radishes, carrots, snap peas, cheddar cauliflower, chard, tomato, cilantro, and also strawberries. Overall, their efforts met with success. Produce was picked, washed, and presented in a beautiful, healthy salad. Students couldn't get enough of this tasty treat. We also discussed interesting facts about lettuce. Check out our Vintage Gardens blog to see what the 4th Grade Garden Club has been up to this year.
