As part of the grant, Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23, Ms. Maria Dimakos of Whole Foods Markets stopped by bringing the makings for vegetable wraps to share with Vintage's 4th Grade Garden Club, plus Mrs. Buck's and Mrs. Apostolu's classes. Students assembled onto a cabbage or lettuce leaf - yummy guacamole, crispy shredded carrots, fun squash noodles, healthy broccoli slaw, spicy mango salsa, crunchy tortilla chips, and sweet cherry tomatoes. For many students, some of these items they hadn't tasted before. Judging by the students' positive reactions, we think they will be more adventurous and open to trying different, healthy foods.
Vintage has a lovely garden tucked away on the west side of the campus off of Densmore Street. We have plans to use the funding to improve the garden to help grow fresh vegetables and fruits all year long and to introduce fun ways to inspire students to make healthy foods a bigger part of their diet. Besides our school garden, classes are encouraged to set up garden areas in or nearby their classroom.
We look forward next school year to seeing what variety of foods we can get to grow, to eating them straight out of the garden, and to trying some of the lesson plans in the informative Whole Kids Foundation "Start Digging!" resource book.
Parents, grandparents, friends of Vintage: Do you like to garden? Are you knowledgeable about growing vegetables? Please volunteer. We could use your help in our garden and/or classroom teachers can use your help. Feel free to contact Mrs. Stone - dstone02@lausd.net or the school office. We always can use help watering, pruning, weeding, etc. Thanks!
