It took lots of work, planning, practicing, and organizing to make it happen. A big thank you to everyone that helped make this event possible.

Each winter finds Vintage's staff and students busy getting ready for the annual performance event. The experience of putting on a musical show is a memorable one for most students. They learn the importance of practice, practice, practice. The big day (or days - as Vintage did performances both on December 18th and 19th) comes and families fill the auditorium. Students sign their hearts out and bask in the applause of family and friends.

Lettuce is a great winter vegetable to grow. Click here to see how much fun they had harvesting and preparing there salad.
Vintage 4th Grade classrooms divided into tribes (groups) and a chief was selected to oversee his or her tribe. Students studied in class and researched in the computer lab about their assigned tribe. Each tribe member was responsible for one or more topics about their tribe. Topics included food, clothing, natural resources, tools, dwellings, geography, trade, beliefs and ceremonies. Students then practiced proper keyboarding skills and typed up their research information to add to a group presentation board. Below is an example of what Mr. Goldberg's class did. In addition, his students made artifacts which they proudly displayed in front of their research. As a tribe, they did a California Indians Gallery Walk. On a worksheet, students noted two interesting fact about each of the other tribes. They then compared and contrasted that tribe to the one they researched. Check out this learning experience below. Repeatedly check the Lost & Found. Sometimes items are held where they were first left behind waiting for someone to return. If no one returns to get them they are put in the Lost & Found. Therefore it is important to repeatedly check the Lost & Found to see if they show up there.
Small lost items (such as glasses, keys, jewelry, etc.) are turned into the office and held until the end of the school year then disposed or donated. Coats, sweaters, lunch bags, scarves, etc. are hung up on the south side of the Science Lab. Those items will be removed and disposed or donated after the last school day of the month. As much as it pains us to get rid of these nice items, there is limited space to store them. Congratulation to Sean D. who won the book fair M&M guessing contest. Sean won a $25 gift certificate, the M&M's and Frog. Mrs. Forbes, our school librarian, thanks all of you that visited and purchased items from the book fair. The book fair serves a couple purposes. One to excite and encourage students to read. Another is to help raise money for our library program to purchase books and fund a librarian. A second book fair will be help in May 5-9.
Friday, June 6, the 4th Grade Garden Club was thrilled to find that their butterfly garden was visited by monarch butterfly caterpillars. These caterpillars were busy munching on plants especially picked to feed or host butterflies, especially Monarch. As cities grow and pave over open fields, there is a need for host plants for larvae and energy sources for adults for monarch and other butterfly populations. The monarch butterfly migrates between areas in Canada and United States to overwintering areas in the United State and Mexico. The Garden Club members were excited to help out with this migration. We will be checking to see iwhat forms next.

Participating in the Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9-15), students learned the basic concepts of Computer Science with drag and drop programming. The activity involved 20 puzzles that taught computer science basics in a fun and easy to learn way. Students loved this activity that also involved some of their favorite characters such as Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. Students also viewed a video with computer programmers, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, encouraging all students to give programming a try. Using Blockly, a visual programming language, students wrote programs by dragging a dropping blocks to get a character through a maze.

This fun encounter taught students about the anatomy of a cow, how milk goes from a cow to their refrigerator, the agriculture technology used and it gave them the chance to meet a cow up close. Language arts, math and science were integrated into the presentation. Students were able to see a heifer cow milked and also got to touch a bull cow. A first experience for many of them.
