Students at Vintage enjoy the Trick-or-Treat holiday for many reasons. Of course, one of the biggest highlights of trick-or-treating is all the sweet booty they bring home. Like a treasure chest, they empty out their bags and sort through for their favorites devouring a few along the way. But Vintage students also like being able to share with others less fortunate. So, they go through their candy and divide it up sending a portion back to school to be shared with others. This year, Vintage is sending the sweets to Frontline Foundation a charity based in Northridge. Frontline Foundation provides emergency meals on Skid Row. Inside bagged lunches, Frontline will add a few of these sweet treats and help brighten someone's meal. Vintage is proud to announce they donated 251 pounds of candy to Frontline Foundation.
On November 5th, second to fifth grade students had the privilege of meeting author Janet Tashjian and her 20 year old son, illustrator, cartoonist, Jake Tashjian. Mrs. Tashjian has written 14 books for elementary school children through young adult. Her series about "Humphrey the Class Hamster" and her "My Life As" series are very popular with Vintage students and ALWAYS checked out, according to our librarian, Mrs. Forbes. Students attended presentations where Mrs. Tashjian inspired students to write, re-write and enjoy the process. She reviewed synonyms with the students as they guessed each caricature that her son, Jake drew for them. These special illustrations were autographed and will be displayed in our library. How great it was for students to have a visit from both an author and an illustrator. It was a great day!

The students worked very hard on these projects. Their tri-fold boards included various facts about the tribe the student studied. Many included models of items or housing that one might have found used by the tribe. Some students even tried their hand at recreating the clothing worn by natives Indians. They enjoyed presenting what they learned about the North American tribe that they researched to other students, parents, and staff who visited their classroom museum. Many visitors were heard to comment that they didn't know there were so many different Native American tribes in north American.
