Wednesday, October 28th, 2015, Vintage’s fourth grade students took part in the annual Pumpkin Math activity. In the morning, students weighed their pumpkins and measured them to find their pumpkin’s circumference and height. They also solved many Common Core aligned problems relating to the measurements they took. In the afternoon, parent volunteers assisted the students in opening the pumpkins. The fourth graders then made scientific observations about the inside of their pumpkins before scooping out seeds to estimate the total number of seeds in their pumpkin.

The Vintage Parent Center is the volunteer hub of Vintage! The Parent Center is located behind Room 5. It is a space for parents to meet and work on campus. The Parent Center is staffed by our Community Representatives. This year's Parent Center representative is Mrs. Alba Meza who welcomes your help. Often work is done in Room 5 "Work Room" so if the Parent Center is empty, check in Room 5 on the other side of the Parent Center (where the copiers are). Everyone is invited to stop by the Main Office to sign in and pick up their volunteer badge before proceeding to the Parent Center. While at the Parent Center volunteers can enjoy an adult conversation and a warm cup of coffee or tea. Our Community Representative organizes TAP (Teacher Assistance Program) day on Tuesdays. Teachers drop off items they need assistance with. Some of these items include: making copies, cutting art projects, putting books together, stapling pages together, and the list goes on. Young children are always welcome to come with their parents to the Parent Center. Grandparents and other family members are always welcome to volunteer. Feel free to contact the office, the principal, or your child's teacher if you have any questions concerning how you can get involved. You can also stop by the Parent Center for more information. We are more then willing to help you get involved. Mrs. Alba Meza - Vintage Community RepresentativeVintage Magnet's 5th grade students did a wonderful job creating a Native American Museum in each of their classrooms. Before they opened their doors to their class museum, they did hours of research on different American tribes. They then created a tri-fold presenting relevant tribe facts such as what clothing were worn, the housing they lived in, crafts they made, and where they lived geographically. Some students even dressed up and made artifacts or models related to their tribe. Students, staff, and families visited the museums and were encouraged to ask questions so that students could share their knowledge. Visitors were answered with well informed answers.

Here is what Room 18's teacher, Mrs. Cruz, had to say about that fun project. First, our students used the scientific method to determine how high we could stack the Oreos before they fell. Next, we used math to determine what our class average was which ended up being 17 Oreos high. Then, we used the Oreo's to create our own sculptures. Last, we wrote a narrative based on the day. Room 18 did the project as well. Click here to check out Room 18's Oreo Project photos. Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math was alive and well at Vintage on Friday, October 16, 2015. That warm, fall evening found the campus teeming with students and their family members. They were back on campus to experience an evening centered around STEAM activities. Numerous activities were held around campus by teachers and STEAM experts (see below). The NASA Night evening kicked off with keynote speaker, Ms. Roxanne Arellanoe, a power systems engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Ms. Arellano shared how much she loved her job at JPL and all the wonderful and exciting opportunities she has had. Ms. Arellano was a reminder to our female students to think about a career in engineering. She also shared how she found math challenging but thought of it as a puzzle to be solved and learned to love it. Below is a list of the fun activities that took place that evening, many of them hands-on. A big thank you to all the participants and to the our Vintage community for coming out and supporting this event. The Vintage boys flag football team have been on a very good streak as of lately. With not having a good year last year the boys were left with a bad taste in their mouths. The returning players are on a mission to prevail once again.
This past weekend they went to play in the semi finals going against Sylmar Leadership and Langdon Elementary. Vintage dominated both games with a couple of interceptions and some big plays for touchdowns. Next week they will be playing in the finals in sun valley. Out of 200 schools that entered this tournament, Vintage is in the Top 8. It will be a week of preparation as they look to bring a trophy home.
