Hess Kramer Science Camp in Malibu hosted Vintage's 5th graders all day on Thursday, May 25th, 2017. Students Fernanda P. and Alyssa. wrote the following account of their fun day. There were many fun activities for us 5th Graders at Science Camp. There was a challenging hike, observing tide pools at the beach, engineering and racing boats, playing games with the camp counselors, and so much more. The hike was very fun, but very dangerous at the same time. Once we finished the hike, the 5th graders went to the beach to look at the tide pools. Some of the 5th graders said that they found starfishes, barnacles, sea slugs, and seashells. After that, we built boats with batteries, Styrofoam, wires, and motors. Soon we raced the boats. It was all very fun. In between the fun activities, we had a BBQ for lunch and a salad. For dinner we had some chicken and rice and an apple strudel for dessert. Most of the students said the food was super tasty and delicious. We all know that we will remember this field trip for the rest of our lives. Below are a few photos capturing the fun. Last Friday, May 26th our 5th Graders danced the evening away to the amazing tunes of DJ Marco Luarte. The 5th graders danced, took pics, and had tons of fun at their "Emoji Formal". Parents even got to join in the fun, dancing the Macarena with their 5th graders. It definitely was a night to remember. We would like to send a special thanks to Mrs. Mourao for allowing the 5th graders to mix n mingle and get jiggy with it! Special thanks to Mrs. Jassem for stepping up and volunteering as chaperon and joining in the fun. Also, we could not have done it without Mrs. Castro for getting us parents motivated and organized! We'll sure miss you next year. Special thanks also to our dance committee: Cindy Valles and Suzie Vicuna for their party planning abilities, Edgar Valles in helping out as our official photographer, Heidy Reyes, Cecilia Rodriguez, and Malina Rios for helping organize a great Dance! Thank you to ALL the parents for bringing the fun, helping hands, and good vibes. You made 2016-2017 another great year!

You won't want to miss this fun evening celebrating science, technology, math, and science. Vintage is happy to welcome as the guest speaker this year, Ms. Judy Lai_Norling of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory who will present from 6 to 6:30 in the auditorium. In addition, there will be hands-on fun activities, STEM expert presentations, and more. Fratelli's Pizza and Kona Ice will be here at 5:30PM in the lunch area. Also that evening, the Science Fair Finalist Reception will be held. For details, check the flyer below or click here to download the flyer. Vintage was the fortunate recipient of a wonderful $2000 grant in early 2017 from Whole Foods Foundation thanks to the work of parent Mrs. S. Dharie, with the support of Vintage staff, Mrs. D. Stone, Mrs. Z. Buck, and Mrs. Mourao. The grant supports schools to inspire students to improve their nutrition and to get excited about fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other nutritional foods. As part of the grant, Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23, Ms. Maria Dimakos of Whole Foods Markets stopped by bringing the makings for vegetable wraps to share with Vintage's 4th Grade Garden Club, plus Mrs. Buck's and Mrs. Apostolu's classes. Students assembled onto a cabbage or lettuce leaf - yummy guacamole, crispy shredded carrots, fun squash noodles, healthy broccoli slaw, spicy mango salsa, crunchy tortilla chips, and sweet cherry tomatoes. For many students, some of these items they hadn't tasted before. Judging by the students' positive reactions, we think they will be more adventurous and open to trying different, healthy foods. Vintage has a lovely garden tucked away on the west side of the campus off of Densmore Street. We have plans to use the funding to improve the garden to help grow fresh vegetables and fruits all year long and to introduce fun ways to inspire students to make healthy foods a bigger part of their diet. Besides our school garden, classes are encouraged to set up garden areas in or nearby their classroom. We look forward next school year to seeing what variety of foods we can get to grow, to eating them straight out of the garden, and to trying some of the lesson plans in the informative Whole Kids Foundation "Start Digging!" resource book. Parents, grandparents, friends of Vintage: Do you like to garden? Are you knowledgeable about growing vegetables? Please volunteer. We could use your help in our garden and/or classroom teachers can use your help. Feel free to contact Mrs. Stone - dstone02@lausd.net or the school office. We always can use help watering, pruning, weeding, etc. Thanks! Students reaped their reward for doing a great job selling “World’s Finest Candy” to raise money for various programs at Vintage Magnet School. Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 students were treated to Mr. Dan Hubbard’s “Love to Learn” starring Ricky Moseley (Macho Man). In addition to thrilling students with their BMX bike riding tricks, Mr. Hubbard (whose wife is a teacher), stressed the importance of studying hard – especially reading, math, science, and engineering; respecting teachers and classmates and being support of them; and being cool like Macho Man by wearing protective gear such as helmets when riding bikes. Fifth grade Vintage student reporters, Julietta, Kirk, and Danielle, interviewed Mr. Dan Hubbard, the organizer of Love to Learn BMX Bike Shows and had this to report. Kirk started out the interview by asking Mr. Hubbard about what kind of pegs he used. Pegs are sticks that on each side of the bikes that the rider can stand on. He uses plastic, light-weight, pegs by Primo because they grind real smooth. Danielle asked about how many bikes does he own. Mr. Hubbard replied, “About 30!" Fifteen bikes that are usable and fifteen that he is working on. He collects very old bikes and fixes them up and hangs them in his garage. Julietta asked him, “What is your favorite bike?” She learned it is a Haro Master with an 80’s look but is actually new. Danielle asked, “How long has he known Macho Man" (the star BMX bike rider) and he replied, "For 8 years.” For more of their interview, watch their student created video below.
