Attention Vintage Families, NASA Night is coming on March 13, 2015 6-8PM. This popular STEM related event promises to present an evening of fun and informative sessions related to science, technology, engineering and math. Vintage is proud to be able to offer keynote speaker, Ashwin Vasavada, Project Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Mars Rover Curiosity project. His presentation will begin promptly at 6PM. After his presentation will be small group presentations and hand-ons activities in classrooms. Back by popular demand are MAD Science, California Science Center, Del Mar Rockhounds, LEGO Robotics, Sidewalk Astronomers, Heal the Bay, and much, much more!
Fuel up before the fun. Fratelli's Pizza will be on sale at 5:30 in the cafeteria. Again, we hope our Vintage families will join us for this special event. Students and staff both enjoyed the silly Seussical events that took place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, this first week of April. From wearing daisies and crazy socks, dressing alike, attending a Seussical birthday party, to coming to school in pajamas, students participated in demonstrating their love for reading.
Wednesday morning, students and their parents attended our Read Across America Seussical event, "A Dozen Doughnuts And A Duck Dog Too"! Parents chose books to donate from special printed sheets that our librarian provided. Everyone enjoyed doughnuts from Krispy Cream and Mrs. Forbes raffled off Seussical prizes. A Big Thank You to the families who donated a total of 60 new books for our library!! In preparation for Read across America, Vintage Magnet hosted a real live author at our achool, Author Joan Bransfield Graham. Mrs. Graham was awarded to fouth grade Vintage teachers and their students for winning the President's Award from a literacy organization called California Readers. Fourth grade previously won a grant which gave them another author and 100 books written by California authors. These books were read and used for a project which was displayed at the California Readers Luncheon back in February winning them the second award.
Author and poet extraordinaire Mrs. Graham shared about the writing process of her books, Splish Splash, Flicker Flash, and The Poem That Will Not End, with the students. She read many of her poems and involved the students with sign language, and musical instruments such as an ocean drum, rain sticks and a thunder making cylinder. The whole student body attended grade level presentations. Mrs. Graham ended the day by doing a poetry workshop with the students who helped win the President's Award and by autographing over 100 books for students and staff. It was a great day!! Vintage is proud to offer training sessions for parents. Vintage is successful because our parents like to be knowledgeable and informed about what their children are expected to learn. We invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to find out more about how to support your child's success with the Common Core State Standards.
