The Vintage Magnet Girls sports teams in the past have been successful enough to give teams a run for their money. They have had teams that look unstoppable, and done the unthinkable. Last year they reached the final rounds 3 out of the 4 times in the afterschool major tournaments that take place every year, and unfortunately have come up short every time.
With a team that does not have much softball experience, it was safe to say that they were the underdogs of the final round of 8 teams. 1 win means they guarantee themselves a trophy. 2 wins and they are now fighting for 1st and 2nd.
The first game they played was against Fair Ave Elementary where the game got tied twice in 4 innings. At 4-4 both teams go to extra innings and Fair Ave goes up to bat first. They score a run and take the lead, but Vintage makes a fantastic catch and gets the double play. Down by 1, and with 2 outs rookie 3rd Gr, Andrea H. hits a homerun to win and advance to the next game.
After all the excitement, Vintage prepared themselves for round 2 which they knew was not going to get easier. They went against a familiar foe in Pacoima Elementary. The game started out rough and were down early in the game 6-0. They did not let any more runs go, but the damage had been done. As Vintage goes up to bat for the last time, they get a rally to end up scoring 7 runs and win a game that everyone thought was already lost.
Vintage definitely looked like a Cinderella story as they could not believe they were now going to play for 1st and 2nd place against a dominating team in Canterbury Elementary. Unfortunately the other team was just too good and simply played better. Our team understood that and took the loss with a smile on their face, because they now realized they are the ONLY team to ever get a trophy for the Girls Sports Team, and a first for the Softball Tournament (boys included).
There was definitely a lot of success that day and they were a very happy group of girls that saw that hard work really does pay off.
Hope you enjoyed the story girls and be proud.
